School Breakfast
We provide free breakfast to all students everyday. Whether in the classroom, hallway or cafeteria, we strive to provide access to proper nutrition at the start of each day, responding to continual research showing that students who eat breakfast do better in school. We provide breakfast as part of the National School Breakfast Program.

School Lunch
We offer lunch every day as part of the National School Lunch Program (NSLP). The NSLP is the oldest federal nutrition program, providing support for lunches served to students enrolled in pre-school through grade 12. We provide a variety of meal choices both weekly and daily at all schools and offer a full fruit and veggie bar included with lunch.

AfterSchool Snack
Providing healthy, nutritious food doesn't stop when the school day ends. In partnership with Burlington Kids, we provide a healthy snack to various afterschool programs throughout the district, giving our students the nutrition they need to continue active lives beyond the school day. Funding for AfterSchool Snack was enacted by the Childhood Reauthorization Act of 1998 (Public Law 105-336), through the NSLP.

Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Program
Through the FFVP, we offer an extra serving of fresh fruits & vegetables during the school day at all of our elementary schools in the district: Champlain Elementary, Integrated Arts Academy at H.O. Wheeler, Sustainability Academy at Lawrence Barnes, J.J. Flynn Elementary, and C.P. Smith Elementary. The goal of the FFVP is to improve children's overall diet and create healthier eating habits to impact their present and future health. Burlington has had great success in using the program's additional funding to purchase locally grown produce. This has not only increased nutritional quality, it has also strengthened the district's mission of connecting to the greater community by supporting our local farmers.
Farm 2 School
We are a proud member of the Burlington School Food Project, a collaborative Farm 2 School project, serving the needs of students in the Burlington school district. The BSFP is a community partnership between various organizations and dedicated individuals including: Shelburne Farms Sustainable Schools Project, VT FEED (Food Education Every Day), Healthy City Youth Initiative and the Friends of Burlington Gardens, and City Market/Onion River Co-op. Started in 2003 out of a USDA Community Food Projects Grant, the BSFP has continued to support the mission of incorporating more whole, fresh and local foods into school meals.

Summer Meals
When school lets out for the summer, we continue to provide meals to various programs throughout the city. Congress created the Summer Food Service Program for Children (SFSP) in 1968 out of concern for those children who depend on free and reduced-price school meals during the school year. Here in Burlington, we continue to provide meals during the summer months through the USDA Seamless Summer Option, which is a streamlined approach to the SFSP.
